Computing

Intent

Computing at Chilton Primary ensures that pupils have the opportunity to use technology and become digitally literate.  We intend children to be able to use technology as a tool for learning, as well as to express themselves and develop their ideas across the curriculum.  By ensuring they understand the advantages and disadvantages associated with online experiences, we want children to develop as respectful, responsible and confident users of technology. These abilities will enable them to safely participate in the digital world of today and of the future.

Implementation

Computing is taught in weeklong blocks for each year group.  Planning is based on the Twinkl units of work, which methodically and systematically teach the skills of computing, allowing for the revisiting of skills. Each units may cover one or more of the following:

  • using technology purposefully to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content;
  • use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly;
  • understand computer networks including the internet and search technology;
  • presenting data and information;
  • algorithms, programming and debugging;
  • media, creative and word-processing.

At Chilton, the use of digital technology is integral across the whole curriculum. Pupils are able to access laptops, iPad and chrome book routinely for research and presentation activities.  They are used by children as a matter of course to reinforce learning and for assessment using online resources such as Accelerated Reading and TT Rock Stars.  Children are expected to treat devices responsibility by using the appropriate passwords and ensuring they are charged for the next user.

Impact

When children leave Chilton, they well equipped for the next step in their education and for a digital future.

The impact of the computing curriculum can be seen through:

  • Teacher assessments
  • Pupil book studies, including pupil voice
  • Children’s books and computing files
  • Evidence from learning walks
