Modern Foreign Languages

At Chilton Community Primary School, we aim to give the children in our care as wide a range of opportunities and experiences as possible. We acknowledge the influence that Europe has on our lives and as the UK is becoming an increasingly multicultural society, we have a duty to provide our children with an understanding of other cultures and languages.

Our intent is for our children to develop a practical knowledge of French, enabling them to express their thoughts and ideas through interactive lessons. We, at Chilton Community Primary School, provide many chances for pupils to communicate for practical purposes and we aim to give our pupils opportunities to gain knowledge about the language as well as the culture and traditions of France. It is our intention to ensure that by the end of our children’s education at our school, they have acquired an understanding of both spoken and written French, confidence to speak in French with others and to know how important other languages can be in their future. 

Aims of the Language Curriculum

The national curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:

• understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
• speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
• can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
• discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied
